Black Friday at Aberafan Shopping Centre: everything you need to know

Black Friday is becoming an increasingly popular date on the shopping calendar – as retailers opt to slash their prices in the build up to Christmas, and shoppers flock to stores in order to find the best discounts and bargains for products like electronics and clothing.

Where did Black Friday originate?

Starting in 1950’s America, Black Friday originally had no correlation to shopping at all, and the term was coined by policemen to describe the immense traffic seen entering Philadelphia in the day following Thanksgiving. It then evolved to represent the point where retailers begin to generate profits, going from “red” to “black” as referenced in American newspapers at the time.

As the financial incentives around the Christmas period grew in the United States, there was an unspoken rule about advertising before Thanksgiving, so Black Friday was the first opportunity for retailers to promote their Christmas products. This also coincides with the Christmas parades that are renowned in the US, the most famous being Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

Black Friday in the UK

Conversely, in the UK, we are more familiar with Black Friday being the last Friday before Christmas, and a popular day for office or workplace parties before the Christmas break.

Retailers in the UK were introduced to Black Friday deals through Amazon, who slashed their prices in the early 2010s, and in the years following, many retailers began to piggyback on the trend.
