Aberafan Shopping Centre - 50th Anniversary

1976 - 2026

Aberafan Shopping Centre is celebrating its 50^th anniversary year in 2026. Officially opened by HRH Princess Anne in 1976, the centre is a popular community hub and the town’s principal shopping destination.

We will be commemorating 50 years of our shopping centre between 9^th February and 30^th September 2026, the anniversary ‘date’ being 20^th February.

Our official launch of the celebrations took place in Centre Square on Friday 20^th February between 11am and 12.30pm. The exhibition is now formally open to the public.

Visitors will be able to explore how, over the years, the centre has changed, with a display of artifacts, a photographic journey, brand evolution, and other memorabilia. Over the ensuing months, the exhibition will develop, with further historic strands and interactive elements being added.

Currently, we have:

• A short film of Aberafan over the past 50 years (with seated area)
• Historical photographs
• A history timeline of the shopping centre
• Ford Capri car, with 'The Professionals' 1970s TV show display
• Free souvenir brochure available
• Commemorative plaque
