Aberafan Shopping Centre Celebrates 50 Years at the Heart of Port Talbot

Aberafan Shopping Centre proudly marked its 50th anniversary on 20th February 2026 with a special celebration event that brought together civic leaders, community representatives, retailers, and long-standing supporters to reflect on five decades at the heart of Port Talbot — and to look confidently towards the future.

The commemorative event took place exactly 50 years to the day since the centre was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal, making the occasion particularly meaningful. Guests enjoyed a programme filled with nostalgia, including a series of short films showcasing photographs and memories from each decade of the centre’s history, alongside speeches from distinguished guests.

Attendees were welcomed by Chris Morgan MBE, Centre Manager, who spoke about Aberafan’s role as more than just a shopping destination — describing it as a place that has supported generations of families, provided livelihoods for local people, and served as a focal point for community life in Port Talbot.

The event was honoured by the attendance of Louise Fleet, Lord-Lieutenant of West Glamorgan; Wayne Carpenter, Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, accompanied by the Mayoress, Mrs Carol Carpenter; David Rees MS; and Steve Hunt, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council.

Speakers reflected on Aberafan’s importance to the town over the last half-century, praising its resilience through changing economic times and its continued commitment to serving the local community. The Lord-Lieutenant and the Mayor both highlighted the centre’s enduring value to Port Talbot and thanked Chris Morgan MBE and Julia Harries, Operations Manager, for their leadership and dedication in ensuring Aberafan continues to thrive and adapt for the future.

A key theme of the celebration was looking ahead. Guests were informed of ongoing and future plans for Aberafan Shopping Centre, supported by landlord investment and essential grant funding delivered through the local authority and the Welsh Government. These plans aim to secure a sustainable, resilient future for the centre during a period of wider economic uncertainty.

The event also recognised the individuals and businesses who have contributed to Aberafan’s success over many years, including long-serving former and current staff, retailers, and contractors. A dedication plaque was unveiled by the Lord-Lieutenant to mark the milestone anniversary, formally commemorating 50 years of service to the community.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed refreshments and live entertainment, continuing the celebrations in a warm and celebratory atmosphere filled with shared memories and pride.

As Aberafan Shopping Centre celebrates its past, the anniversary event made clear that the focus is firmly on the future — ensuring that this much-loved centre remains a vital part of Port Talbot life for generations to come
