Aberafan Shopping Centre Hosts “Op Bang” Community Safety Operation

Aberafan Shopping Centre was proud to host South Wales Police’s Op Bang community engagement in-centre on 28th October — a proactive operation designed to keep the public safe during seasonal celebrations such as Halloween and Bonfire Night.

The centre fully supports Op Bang’s mission to prevent anti-social behaviour, protect vulnerable people, and ensure families can enjoy the festivities safely and responsibly.

Police Officers, Fire Officers and PCSOs were on site speaking with shoppers, offering safety information, and reminding young people and parents of the importance of planning ahead during the busy Halloween period.

Key Safety Principles Promoted

For trick-or-treating:

  • Children should always go with a trusted adult and have a clear plan.
  • Never enter a stranger’s home.
  • Stay visible — use reflective clothing or torches.
  • Be aware of surroundings and respect household boundaries.
  • Do not scare or intimidate vulnerable residents.

On behaviour:

  • Throwing eggs or flour is classed as criminal damage — it is not harmless fun.
  • Anti-social behaviour will be dealt with by enforcement where necessary.

Regarding fireworks:

  • Fireworks should be enjoyed at organised public displays.
  • It is illegal to set off fireworks in a public place

Aberafan Shopping Centre is committed to supporting initiatives like Op Bang and thanks South Wales Police for helping ensure that Halloween and Bonfire Night remain safe, family-friendly occasions for everyone.
