Aberafan Shopping Centre Hosts Unforgettable VE Day 80 Celebration Street Party

Aberafan Shopping Centre was proud to host a truly unforgettable and historic celebration on 8th May, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a spectacular street party event that brought together generations in honour of our veterans.

The event commenced with a ‘veterans’ march through the Centre, a powerful and emotional moment that brought many to tears. It was a stirring reminder of the bravery, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of those who served – and set the tone for what would become a day to remember.

In a vibrant, street party-themed setting, the Centre welcomed a distinguished list of guests including the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Phillip Hunkin; the Mayor and Mayoress of Neath Port Talbot; Stephen Kinnock MP; David Rees AM; Council Leader Steve Hunt; and Chief Executive of Neath Port Talbot County Council, Frances O'Brien. Also in attendance was Royal British Legion Port Talbot Chairman, John Bamsey, along with many cherished local veterans and members of the public.

The day’s highlight was the presence of three remarkable Second World War veterans:

Ron Morris, 96, RAF veteran

Dave Williams, 98, Royal Artillery veteran

And our esteemed Guest of Honour, Mrs Gwenfron Picken, 101 years old, who served as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park – a true national treasure.

The Centre was also delighted to welcome pupils from Cefn Saeson and Ysgol Bae Baglan Comprehensive Schools, who contributed to the warm, intergenerational spirit of the occasion.

Organised and hosted onsite by Centre Manager Chris Morgan MBE and Operations Manager Julia Harries, the event exceeded all expectations, both in turnout and atmosphere. Guests were treated to a moving series of keynote speeches, followed by a solemn two-minute silence, observed in unity with a full Honour Party from the Royal British Legion – a powerful and respectful tribute.

Following the formalities, the celebration continued in joyous fashion as attendees enjoyed the company, stories, and a generous spread of food and refreshments provided by Aberafan Shopping Centre. Special thanks go to Mel, Aimee, and the team at Baristas Coffee Shop for their wonderful donation of teas, coffees, and cakes, which were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Lee Dunkley and the on-site Kingdom Team for their invaluable support throughout the day. A very special mention must go to Centre team member Ryan Craig, who brought history to life in his period-accurate 1944 South Wales Borderers uniform, adding a unique and memorable visual touch to the day.

This VE Day 80 Celebration was more than just an event – it was a moment in time, a joyous, poignant, and proud occasion that will live long in the memory of all who attended.
