Aberafan Shopping Centre has once again delivered a moment of cultural significance with a truly memorable event celebrating the life and legacy of local legend Richard Burton, as part of the Centre’s ongoing Richard Burton Centenary Exhibition.
A large and appreciative crowd gathered to enjoy readings and performances of original poems and prose by acclaimed writer Sally Roberts Jones, created especially for the exhibition. Her nostalgic and evocative words brought to life the spirit, passion, and heritage of the great actor from Pontrhydyfen, capturing the hearts of those in attendance.
The performances took place against a spectacular backdrop of over 200 art submissions from local schools, each offering a unique “Interpretation of Richard Burton.” The vibrant and diverse artworks transformed the shopping centre into a gallery of community creativity, showcasing the deep admiration and pride that young artists hold for Burton’s enduring legacy.
The event reached a powerful conclusion with a moving performance by the Cymric Male Voice Choir, whose stirring harmonies provided a fitting tribute to the celebrated Welsh icon.
This remarkable event was made possible through the vision and dedication of Aberafan Shopping Centre’s Operations Manager, Julia Harries, whose tireless efforts ensured every detail came together seamlessly. Julia worked in close collaboration with Sally Roberts Jones, Helen John, and Merlene Hunt of Portablo Arts, forming a creative partnership that brought culture, art, and community together in an inspiring celebration.
Their collective work not only honoured one of Wales’s greatest sons but also demonstrated how art and collaboration can transform public spaces into living, breathing hubs of heritage and creativity.
As the event marks the beginning of the final phase of Aberafan Shopping Centre’s four-month exhibition, it stands as a testament to the power of community, creativity, and cultural pride—qualities that continue to define and uplift Port Talbot.
There will be one more opportunity to experience this special event at 1pm on Saturday, 8th November, in the Centre Square, giving visitors a final chance to enjoy the readings and atmosphere of this unique celebration. During this closing event, the three winners of the “Interpretation of Richard Burton” art competition will also be officially announced, bringing the event to a fitting conclusion.
