Poignant 80th Anniversary VJ Day Commemoration at Aberafan Shopping Centre

On 15th August, Aberafan Shopping Centre hosted a moving and emotional commemoration to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Japan (VJ Day) — the day that brought the Second World War to a close.

Led by Centre Manager Chris Morgan MBE, with the dedicated support of Operations Manager Julia Harries, the event honoured the sacrifices of those who served in the Far East, particularly prisoners of war who endured unimaginable hardships. The ceremony featured stirring speeches, heartfelt tributes, and a two-minute silence observed at midday, bringing together veterans, dignitaries, and members of the public in a shared act of remembrance.

The day was made possible through the efforts of the Aberafan team, whose behind-the-scenes work ensured a seamless and meaningful event.

Speaking after the ceremony, Chris Morgan MBE said:

“Today was about honouring the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who fought in the Far East. Eighty years on, it’s vital that we continue to remember their service and pass their stories on to future generations.”

The event forms part of Aberafan’s continuing commitment to commemorating key military anniversaries, having hosted events for the Battle of Britain, D-Day, and VE Day earlier this year.
